More "Layar Bestari" If Kapit Pilot Project Successful, Says Ahmad Shabery

KAPIT (Sarawak), Oct 27 (Bernama) -- The Information Ministry will launch more "Layar Bestari", a mobile cinema service, if the pilot project is successful, Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said.

He said the "Layar Bestari" was another medium to forge closer ties with the people and to effectively disseminate government policies.

"It is also very handy in obtaining feedback from the grassroots on government policies.

"It is the most ideal, cost-effective approach especially in going into very isolated villages and longhouses," he told a news conference on arrival here to launch the first "Layar Bestari" at the town square here Monday night.

He said the medium was very popular before the coming of the televisions, video compact disc players and other audio-visual platforms.

Shabery said the department would monitor the progress of the "Layar Bestari" to check its acceptability, popularity and effectivenes in the state as well as in Sabah, its next launching venue.

He said it was vital for it to have value-added features such as top-notch equipment and audio system to attract the crowd.

"We will screen the latest local movies to help encourage the local creative industry and development of documentaries to promote patriotism among the people.

"We will bring in popular comedians as well," he said.

He said the department had another medium -- the "Pentarama" or travelling concert troupe -- for the same purpose.

"We have a unit each in Sabah and Sarawak and a few in the peninsula. But the Layar Bestari is more cost-effective," he said.
